I taped and saw the Starz! airing. I always tape the films when they're shown on TV in case of anything "special". Nothing "special" so I erased the tape (Pan & Scan doesn't compare to my Letterbox laserdisc). However, it was a special treat since it was a new version I haven't seen before -- a third Pan & Scan version!I've made a list of the differences (which you might want to add to
GBHQ -- I'm gonna also post it on my Firehouse Forum -- which one would have to
join to see):-- It came from an original color print like Pan & Scan #1 (P&S#1), not
a blue tinted print like P&S#2.
-- Little unnecessary camera pans (UCP) here & there. They are more jerky than in previous versions.
-- The outside of Weaver Hall is shown in an UCP that goes from the
people walking into the building to the sign on the building. In P&S#1 only the sign is shown. In P&S#2 only the people are shown.
-- Like P&S#1, Harold Ramis in not seen when he says his one line as the 3 GBs & the hotel manager walk down the lobby of the Sedgewick Hotel. In P&S#2 they inserted a seperate shot of Harold.
-- The hotel elevator shot is done as a few UCPs. In P&S#1 it was done as one steady shot through a bit of letterboxing. In P&S#2 it was done as seperate shots.
-- In this version and in P&S#2 you can see Egon gesture to Peter on how much to charge the Sedgewick Hotel. Egon was cut out of P&S#1.
-- In the "Ghost Fever Grips New York" montage, through the use of UCPs, the camera stops briefly on both the newspaper/magazine covers & on the live footage. In P&S#1 the camera was kept steady showing a little of both. In P&S#2, the covers flew by as the camera focused on the live footage.
-- In between the Tavern On The Green & Peter getting out of the cab,
there is one black frame. I presume this is where one film reel ended and the
other began -- except this time they couldn't do a perfect edit when it
was transferred to video.
-- Why P&S is bad -- Instead of seeing Dana & Louis on their pedestals
(before the lightning strikes them opening the door atop the Shandor
Building), we see the bench-like structure that sits inbetween them.
That loses ALL of the important info in the original shot. It would have
been more resourceful for the Pan & Scanner to have done one quick UCP from
one end of the shot (Dana on the left) to the other (Louis on the right).
-- The end credits are letterboxed, like in P&S#2. In P&S#1 they were
in Pan & Scan.
-- The end credits text, on the black background, is smaller. In P&S#1, and possibly in P&S#2, the text is much larger.-Paul Rudoff
