Ghostbusters sets the standard... for Guinness
GBHQ GreenGoo correspondant Paul Rudoff with the story:I was at the supermarket today, at the checkout, when I saw the book "Guinness World Records: Great World Events Of The Last Thirty-Five Years" sitting among the magazines on the rack. Since I had a bit of a wait, I picked it up and started reading it. I went to the 1977 section first, since that was the year I was born. There was a little blurb on Star Wars. That got me thinking, "Well, maybe there's something about Ghostbusters in the 1984" section." Sure enough, there was. It read:
"GHOSTBUSTERS STRIKE A FUNNY CHORD: The trend for movie merchandising tie-ins scaled new heights with the success of Ivan Reitman's Ghostbusters, a fun film which combined the comedy talents of Saturday Night Live stalwarts Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd with spectacular special effects. The film took more than $120 million, making it the highest-grossing film of the year"
You'll notice that they misspelled Dan's last name. This is just the GB portion of the article. The rest of it told about other films that came out that year. It was printed next to a photo of Dan & Bill shooting their weapons atop the Shandor Building. It appears to be a pre-SFX still, as the proton streams are missing.
The book is a Time Inc. Special, which means that it probably isn't going to remain on the shelves for very long. The book is rather costly, $9.99 US / $14.99 CA -- though my supermarket charged me $19.46 (don't worry, I went back and they refunded me the overcharge).
